FACT CHECKING COMMON MYTHS ABOUT ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Separating fact from fiction when it comes to electric motorcycles’ safety and performance

The world of electric motorbikes is clouded by misinformation. These myths can deter potential riders, especially when they concern safety or performance. However, going electric doesn't mean compromising on either front. Thanks to technological advancements, electric   motorcycles are now strong competitors to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, offering similar performance without the harmful emissions or noise pollution. Electric motorbikes have come a long way from the days when these myths first emerged.

Myth 1: The batteries are dangerous

This myth couldn’t be further from the truth! Modern electric motorbike batteries, particularly ours, are equipped with advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) designed to protect both the bike and riders. These systems include safeguards like overcharge, overdischarge, overcurrent, overvoltage, and overtemperature protection, along with short circuit prevention, defensive housing, and temperature sensors that alert the operating system in case of issues.

Additionally, there is a common misconception about the frequency of EV fires. According to various reporting agencies, including the Swedish Civil Contingencies (SCC) Agency, and Honeywell Safety and Productivity Solutions, EV fires are actually less likely than ICE vehicles with SCC reporting that EV fires are 20 times less likely. The increase in reported EV fires is likely due to the growing number of EVs on the road, rather than an increased risk of fire.

Myth 2: They aren’t suitable for long-distance travel

This myth likely stems from the early days of EV technology when range was a significant concern. According to Minister Law, around 60% of people considering an e-motorbike were discouraged by concerns about limited range. However, modern electric motorbikes now offer impressive ranges, so you have nothing to fear!

Different electric motorbikes are designed for different use cases, and their battery capacities reflect this. For instance, our Fire range of powertrains is designed for touring bikes and can handle long trips, with the HU06 model offering an impressive 200km range on a single charge. When comparing ranges, it’s important to consider the bike’s intended use. Commuter bikes, for example, prioritize shorter city rides over 100+km tours. If you’re looking for a bike with a large range, be sure to choose one designed for that purpose. If range is a big factor for you, check out our blog on range anxiety to settle your worries.

Myth 3: There’s a lack of charging infrastructure

One of the most cited barriers to adopting an EV globally is the perceived lack of charging infrastructure, with a third of survey respondents in one study listing this as their main concern. In many countries, particularly in Western Europe, there has already been investment into charging infrastructure, with the number of charging ports rising year on year. This in part is due to the goal set out by the European Commission to reach 3 million charging ports by 2030.

Similarly, other developed nations including the USA and Japan, are currently working to build their charging network and have both pledged investment to build their charging infrastructure.
For our electric powertrains, we have designed the batteries to be removable, allowing them to be charged at any standard power outlet. This reduces the reliance on public charging stations, giving you the flexibility to charge your bike wherever you go.

Myth 4: They’re too expensive!

According to 27% of survey respondents, the upfront cost is the biggest deterrent to purchasing an EV. However, like most products, EVs are available at various price points. While the cost of the initial purchase may be higher, electric motorbikes have lower operating costs due to the reduced maintenance and absence of fuel expenses. Over time, these savings can make the bike more economical to run, effectively allowing it to pay for itself in the long term.

Myth 5: Electric motorcycles are slow

Electric motorbikes come in a wide range of top speeds, each suited to its specific purpose. In our lineup of drive systems, for example, the top speeds vary for the partner brands bikes: the Storm off-road systems range between 70-90 km/h, the Forest city systems between 80-100 km/h, and the Fire touring systems top out at a fast 130 km/h. These speeds are tailored for off-road adventures, urban commuting, and touring, respectively.

For those seeking more speed, electric superbikes are also available. Our upcoming Lightning range of powertrains is being designed with high top speeds and extended ranges, perfect for riders who crave exhilarating performance.

Electric motorbikes are just as safe—if not safer—and perform just as well as ICE vehicles, all without nasty carbon emissions. The key is to understand your needs and choose the right bike based on its intended use and specifications. With the right match, you’ll find that riding electric is not a compromise but a rewarding choice for your wallet and environment!
